We thought we would start off by sharing what this website is, as well as what it is not. We hope that this will be kept in mind as the reader navigates this website. 

What it is

This website focuses on the business aspects of the music industry for the average working musician. Here, you will find articles written in collaboration with people with experience on a variety of topics. It is our hope that this resource will help the reader with navigating the normally unspoken, and often tricky, parts of being a musician.

As musicians ourselves, we understand the desire to just focus on the music (after all, that is why we’re all here). However, if you want to make money from your music, you will have to understand the large and complex ecosystem that is the music industry. We hope that we can help demystify some of this complexity for the reader.

What it is not

Not legal advice: Nothing on this website is intended to be legal advice. While there may be articles discussing legal matters, please understand that they are intended as very general guides and not a substitution for obtaining legal advice. From personal experience, the things you sign can have a long term impact on your journey as a musician and it pays to be careful. 

Not the gospel truth: We put in effort to find those we think are qualified to share their views. That said, the views shared are of course one perspective of many and are in no way intended to be a declaration of the objective right answer. Usually, there is no right answer and much will depend on the context. 

Not a platform to bash people: Some of what is written may appear to be confrontational. However, what we will bash (if anything) are ideas and not people and we hope that what is said is taken in the right spirit – that of openness, sharing and learning. In the same vein, please feel free to reach out for any discussion or to point out anything that you think is incorrect (or want to bash). We are always open to learn.

Jon & Ben

Jon is a musician and a lawyer. 

As a practising lawyer, he has worked on matters relating to the media and music industry. He also works on a wide range of corporate and commercial transactions as part of his legal practice.

In addition to being the lead guitarist, Jon is also one of the operational driving forces behind local band Astronauts, producing original music.

Ben works in the MI (Musical Instruments) industry as an Artist & Community Manager by day and a musician by night.

This unique intersection of passion and career has given him opportunities to work alongside some of the industry’s top talents as a session musician (locally) and as a content strategist & artist marketer (globally). 

Ben is also a founding member of Astronauts.
